A quick and easy recipe for juicy, flavorful grilled hamburgers with simple ingredients and customizable toppings, perfect for family gatherings and casual cookouts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 4 cheese slices (optional: cheddar, American, or Swiss)
  • 4 burger buns, lightly toasted
  • Lettuce leaves (iceberg or romaine)
  • Sliced ripe tomatoes
  • Thinly sliced red onions
  • Dill pickle slices
  • Ketchup, yellow mustard, mayonnaise, or favorite burger sauces
  • Optional extras: 4 crispy bacon strips, sautéed mushrooms, avocado slices

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 375-400°F / 190-204°C), which usually takes 10-15 minutes.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently with your hands without overworking the meat.
  3. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each into a ¾-inch (2 cm) thick patty. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb.
  4. Lightly sprinkle extra salt and pepper on both sides of the patties just before placing them on the grill.
  5. Place patties on the preheated grill. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on the first side without pressing down. Flip once and cook for another 4 minutes for medium doneness. Add cheese slices during the last minute and close the lid to melt.
  6. While the burgers finish cooking, brush the cut sides of the buns with melted butter or oil and toast on the grill for 1-2 minutes until golden and crispy.
  7. Assemble the burgers by layering the bottom bun with lettuce, the beef patty, tomato slices, onions, pickles, and preferred condiments. Top with the bun crown.
  8. Serve immediately while hot and juicy.

Notes

Do not overmix the meat to avoid dense burgers. Press a thumb indentation in patties to keep them flat and juicy. Flip burgers only once. Rest burgers for 2-3 minutes after grilling to redistribute juices. Watch for flare-ups and move patties if needed. For gluten-free, use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps. For dairy-free, omit cheese or use dairy-free slices.
