holiday cheese ball recipe - featured image

A quick and easy festive cheese ball combining tangy cream cheese, sharp cheddar, tart cranberries, and crunchy toasted pecans. Perfect for holiday parties and crowd-pleasing snacks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz (225 g) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups (200 g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup (75 g) dried cranberries
  • 3/4 cup (90 g) pecans, chopped and toasted
  • 2 stalks green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: fresh herbs like parsley or chives, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Toast the pecans in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring frequently, until fragrant and slightly browned, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese and shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Use an electric mixer on medium speed or a sturdy spoon to blend until smooth and well combined, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Stir in dried cranberries, finely chopped green onions, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently to distribute ingredients evenly without breaking down the cranberries.
  4. Form the mixture into a compact ball about 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter using your hands or a spatula. If too sticky, refrigerate for 15 minutes before shaping.
  5. Spread toasted pecans on a plate and roll the cheese ball in the nuts, pressing lightly to adhere and cover the surface evenly.
  6. Wrap the cheese ball tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight, to let flavors meld and firm up.
  7. Remove from fridge about 20 minutes before serving to soften slightly. Serve on a festive platter with crackers, sliced baguette, or fresh vegetable sticks.

Notes

Use room temperature cream cheese for easier mixing. Toast pecans gently to avoid bitterness. Chill the cheese ball for at least 2 hours or overnight for best flavor and firmer texture. Can be made ahead and stored up to 5 days refrigerated or frozen (texture may change). For nut-free version, substitute pecans with crushed pretzels or toasted breadcrumbs. For dairy-free, use vegan cream cheese and plant-based shredded cheese.
