classic old fashioned recipe - featured image

A simple and classic Old Fashioned cocktail recipe featuring bourbon or rye whiskey, bitters, sugar, and a fresh orange twist for a bright, aromatic finish. Perfect for relaxing evenings and easy to make at home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 sugar cube or 1/4 oz (7 ml) simple syrup
  • 1 large piece of fresh orange peel
  • Ice (large cubes or a big sphere)
  • Optional: Maraschino cherry for garnish

Instructions

  1. Place the sugar cube in an Old Fashioned glass. If using simple syrup, skip this step.
  2. Pour 2 dashes of Angostura bitters onto the sugar cube.
  3. Muddle the sugar and bitters together until mostly dissolved, forming a wet paste.
  4. Add 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon or rye whiskey over the muddled sugar and bitters.
  5. Fill the glass with large ice cubes or one big ice sphere.
  6. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20-30 seconds to blend without bruising the whiskey.
  7. Cut a wide strip of orange peel, avoiding too much white pith. Twist it firmly over the glass to release oils, rub the rim with the peel, then drop it in.
  8. Optionally, add a maraschino cherry for garnish.

Notes

Use large ice cubes or spheres to slow dilution. Muddle sugar and bitters gently to avoid gritty texture. Twist orange peel over the glass to release essential oils and rub the rim for enhanced aroma. Avoid shaking to preserve whiskey’s smoothness. Adjust sugar or bitters to taste. Premix whiskey, bitters, and sugar syrup up to 24 hours ahead; add ice and orange peel just before serving.
