A refreshing and easy-to-make sparkling blueberry basil lemonade mocktail that combines the zing of lemon, sweet blueberries, and herbaceous basil for a perfect summer drink.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (150 g) fresh blueberries
  • 1012 fresh basil leaves
  • 34 medium fresh lemons (about 1 cup or 240 ml fresh lemon juice)
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (240 ml) water
  • 4 cups (960 ml) chilled sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slices and extra blueberries for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the simple syrup by combining ½ cup sugar and 1 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently until the sugar dissolves completely (3-5 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.
  2. Juice 3-4 medium lemons to yield about 1 cup (240 ml) fresh lemon juice. Strain to remove seeds and pulp.
  3. Add fresh basil leaves and blueberries (reserve some for garnish) to the bottom of a large pitcher. Gently muddle with a muddler or wooden spoon to bruise the basil and crush the blueberries without making a puree.
  4. Pour the cooled simple syrup and fresh lemon juice into the pitcher with the muddled basil and blueberries. Stir gently to combine.
  5. Fill the pitcher halfway with ice cubes, then slowly add 4 cups (960 ml) chilled sparkling water. Stir gently to mix without losing fizz.
  6. Garnish with lemon slices and whole blueberries. Serve immediately in tall glasses with extra ice and a sprig of basil.

Notes

Muddle basil gently to avoid bitterness. Use fresh lemons for best flavor. Prepare lemonade base up to 24 hours ahead and add sparkling water just before serving to keep fizz. Substitute sugar with honey, agave, or sugar-free sweeteners as desired. Frozen blueberries can be used if fresh are unavailable.
