This Football Field Dip is a showstopping layered appetizer designed to look like a mini football field, complete with sour cream yard lines and olive ‘players.’ It’s creamy, zesty, and perfect for game day parties, potlucks, or family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (16 oz) refried beans (vegetarian if preferred)
  • 1 packet (1 oz) taco seasoning
  • 1 cup (8 oz) sour cream, divided
  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 2 ripe avocados, mashed (or 1 cup guacamole)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup (4 oz) shredded cheddar cheese or Mexican blend
  • 1 cup salsa (chunky style preferred)
  • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes (optional, if less liquid is desired)
  • 1/2 cup sliced black olives
  • 1/4 cup sliced green onions
  • 1/2 cup chopped lettuce (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream (for piping yard lines)
  • Small handful grape tomatoes or red bell pepper strips (for decoration)
  • Extra olives or bits of cheese (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, mix refried beans with taco seasoning. Spread evenly into the bottom of a 9×13-inch glass dish.
  2. In another bowl, beat together 1 cup sour cream and softened cream cheese until smooth and fluffy. Spread gently over the bean layer.
  3. Mash avocados with lime juice, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Spread this guacamole layer over the cream cheese mixture, smoothing to the edges.
  4. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the guacamole. Top with salsa or chopped tomatoes, spreading gently.
  5. Scatter sliced olives, green onions, and chopped lettuce (if using) across the top, leaving a clean green ‘field’ in the center for decorating.
  6. Using a piping bag or zip-top bag filled with sour cream, pipe lines across the guacamole to mimic yard lines. Use bell pepper strips or cheese sticks for ‘goal posts.’
  7. Add final touches: use black olives or grape tomatoes to create ‘players’ and a small slice of cheese or mini sausage for the ‘football’ in the center.
  8. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (up to 24 hours ahead). Serve with sturdy tortilla chips or veggie sticks. Let sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, chill each layer briefly before adding the next to keep layers distinct. Drain salsa and tomatoes to prevent sogginess. Use thick guacamole for clean yard lines. Decorate just before serving for the freshest look. Easily adaptable for vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets.
