A comforting apple crisp featuring cinnamon-spiced apples and a crunchy oatmeal topping, perfect for chilly evenings and family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 6 medium apples; Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice 6 medium apples into roughly 1/4-inch thick slices. Toss them in a large bowl with 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, and 1 tablespoon flour. Mix gently until the apples are well coated.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture to your baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add the cold, cubed butter and use a pastry cutter or two forks to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized bits.
  5. Evenly sprinkle the topping over the apple filling without pressing it down.
  6. Bake for 40-45 minutes until the apples are bubbling at the edges and the topping is golden brown and crisp. If the topping browns too quickly, loosely tent with foil after 30 minutes.
  7. Cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to let the juices thicken.

Notes

Use cold butter for a crunchy topping. If apples look dry before baking, drizzle 1/4 cup apple cider or water over the filling. Tent with foil if topping browns too fast. Can substitute almond flour for gluten-free or coconut oil for dairy-free. Add nuts or spices for variations.
