A bright and herbaceous twist on the classic whiskey sour, featuring muddled fresh strawberries and basil for a refreshing spring and summer cocktail.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz (60 ml) whiskey (bourbon or rye)
  • 34 medium fresh strawberries, rinsed and hulled
  • 68 fresh basil leaves
  • 3/4 oz (22 ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz (15 ml) simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water)
  • Ice cubes
  • Optional: 1 egg white for frothy top

Instructions

  1. Rinse and hull 3-4 medium strawberries and pick 6-8 fresh basil leaves. Juice a lemon to yield about 3/4 oz (22 ml) of fresh lemon juice. Measure out 2 oz (60 ml) whiskey and 1/2 oz (15 ml) simple syrup.
  2. In the bottom of a cocktail shaker, gently muddle the strawberries with the basil leaves, pressing just enough to release juices and oils without pulverizing.
  3. Add whiskey, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white if using.
  4. Fill the shaker about two-thirds full with ice cubes.
  5. Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds to chill and blend flavors.
  6. Strain the mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
  7. Garnish with a sprig of fresh basil and a sliced strawberry on the rim. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use fresh lemon juice and ripe strawberries for best flavor. Muddle gently to avoid bitterness from basil. Adjust simple syrup to taste. Egg white is optional for a frothy top. Double strain if you prefer a smoother texture. Large ice cubes recommended for slower dilution. Muddled fruit and basil can be prepared up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerated, but add citrus and whiskey just before serving.
