Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined (shell-on works too)
  • 2 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning (reduce to 1 tablespoon for milder flavor)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, smashed
  • 2 bay leaves (optional)
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons prepared horseradish
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • A few dashes hot sauce (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In the bottom of your steamer pot, combine 1 cup of water, 2 tablespoons Old Bay seasoning, smashed garlic cloves, bay leaves, and lemon slices. Bring to a rolling boil over medium-high heat (about 5–7 minutes).
  2. Rinse shrimp under cold water and pat dry. Decide if you want to leave tails intact or remove them.
  3. Place shrimp in the steamer basket in a single layer if possible. Cover tightly with a lid and steam for 4–6 minutes until shrimp turn pink, opaque, and curl slightly. Avoid overcooking.
  4. While shrimp steam, whisk together ketchup, melted butter, prepared horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, fresh lemon juice, and hot sauce in a bowl. Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper.
  5. Transfer shrimp to a serving dish, drizzle with a little melted butter if desired, and serve immediately with cocktail sauce and lemon wedges.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the steamer to ensure even cooking. Watch the shrimp closely to avoid overcooking, which makes them rubbery. The cocktail sauce can be made up to 2 days ahead and stored in the fridge. For a dairy-free sauce, substitute butter with olive oil. Use fresh or fully thawed shrimp for best results.
