A quick and easy taco bar recipe featuring perfectly seasoned meat and fresh classic toppings, ideal for entertaining and casual gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef or ground turkey (lean)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup water or beef broth
  • Shredded lettuce
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Chopped red onion
  • Fresh cilantro leaves
  • Shredded cheddar or Mexican blend cheese
  • Fresh lime wedges
  • Jalapeño slices (optional)
  • Sour cream or Mexican crema
  • Guacamole or sliced avocado
  • Soft corn or flour tortillas (6-8 inch diameter)
  • Hard taco shells (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash and dry all fresh produce. Shred lettuce, dice tomatoes and onion, chop cilantro, slice jalapeños, and cut lime wedges. Arrange in separate bowls or on a large platter.
  2. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil if needed. Cook chopped onion until softened, about 3 minutes.
  3. Add minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Add ground beef or turkey. Cook, stirring occasionally, until browned and no longer pink, about 6-8 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed.
  5. Sprinkle chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper over the meat. Stir in tomato paste and pour in water or broth. Mix well.
  6. Reduce heat to low and simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. Taste and adjust seasonings if needed.
  7. Warm tortillas in a dry pan over medium heat for about 30 seconds each side, or wrap in foil and warm in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes.
  8. Arrange seasoned meat, toppings, tortillas, and shells on a table or counter with small bowls for sour cream, guacamole, and lime wedges.
  9. Invite everyone to build their own tacos and enjoy.

Notes

Use lean ground turkey for a lighter option. Warm tortillas before serving for best texture. Add extra cayenne or hot sauce for more heat. Store cooked meat in airtight container in fridge up to 3 days. Tortillas are best fresh but can be refrigerated wrapped in foil for 1-2 days. Leftover meat reheats well in skillet or microwave.
