Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (90g) old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (220g) packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (175g) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup (150g) assorted candy pieces (e.g., M&Ms, Reese’s Pieces, chopped candy bars)
  • Optional: ½ cup (60g) chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, rolled oats, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl, beat the softened butter with brown sugar and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract until smooth and glossy.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring just until combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in the chocolate chips, candy pieces, and nuts if using.
  7. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until edges are golden brown and the center is set but still soft (a toothpick inserted should come out with a few moist crumbs).
  9. Cool completely in the pan on a wire rack to achieve chewy texture.
  10. Once cooled, lift the bars out using parchment paper edges or cut directly in the pan. Serve at room temperature.

Notes

[‘Do not overbake to keep bars chewy; remove when center is still soft.’, ‘Chilling the dough for 30 minutes before baking enhances chewiness and flavor.’, ‘Use quality chocolate chips and candies for best texture and taste.’, ‘Line pan with parchment paper for easy removal and cleanup.’, ‘Let bars cool completely before slicing to prevent crumbling.’, ‘Mix gently to avoid tough bars from gluten development.’]
