A flavorful and customizable taco bar setup perfect for casual gatherings, allowing everyone to build their own tacos with a variety of fresh toppings and proteins.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef, chicken, or turkey (choose lean for less grease)
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1012 small corn or flour tortillas
  • Optional: hard taco shells
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes or pico de gallo
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1 avocado, sliced or mashed
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese
  • 12 jalapeños, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 1/2 cup sour cream or Mexican crema
  • 1/4 cup chipotle in adobo sauce
  • 1 cup black beans or refried beans
  • Fresh lime wedges
  • Pickled red onions or jalapeños

Instructions

  1. Prepare the protein: In a large skillet over medium heat, add 1 lb of chosen ground meat. Break apart with a spatula, sprinkle in smoked paprika, ground cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Add minced garlic and stir well. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 8-10 minutes. Squeeze in juice of one lime, stir, and remove from heat. Keep warm.
  2. Warm the tortillas: Wrap tortillas in a clean kitchen towel and place in a tortilla warmer or wrap in foil and heat in a preheated oven at 200°F (90°C) for 5-10 minutes to keep them soft and pliable.
  3. Prep fresh toppings: Dice tomatoes, chop lettuce, onions, cilantro, slice jalapeños and avocado. Arrange each topping in separate bowls. For chipotle crema, blend sour cream with chipotle in adobo sauce until smooth.
  4. Heat beans: Warm black or refried beans in a small pot or microwave until hot, stirring occasionally.
  5. Set up the taco bar: Lay out warm tortillas, protein, beans, and all toppings on a large table or counter. Include lime wedges and pickled extras.
  6. Serve and enjoy: Encourage guests to build their own tacos by layering ingredients as they like. Remind to squeeze fresh lime juice over their creations.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the pan when browning meat to avoid steaming. Marinate protein in lime juice, garlic, and spices for 20-30 minutes if time allows. Warm tortillas wrapped in towel or foil at 200°F to keep soft. Chop toppings ahead to save time. Adjust spice level with jalapeños and chipotle crema on the side. Store leftovers in separate airtight containers and reheat gently.
